Oct 14 th, 1956 (I think)
I was in Nursing school in Mpls.   Orrin, Steven and Richard and I attended the wedding in Dawson, Mn.   Ruby was advised not to travel  because Roger was due at any time to be born.  Just before time to leave, Orrin decided to wash the car which resulted in a late start and we got to the church as the ceremony was starting.  Driving home, I was so embarrassed, when Steven and Richard were streaming toilet paper out the car windows!   I think toilet paper streamers were attached to the grooms car as a prank as was the custom.  Bob, I think borrowed Marvin's car for the honeymoon trip to the North shore.

Mark Oman's birthday, Friday, Oct 12.
Happy Birthday, Mark

About the Quit Claim Deed

My motivation for removing my share from the farm is my way of lowering the number of owners.  Fortunately it was/is easy to simply do the Quit Claim Deed.  Farm share ownership is not a burden but rather a piece of the puzzle of the farm puzzle.  We need to fit together all the pieces(families/their wishes) to complete the new and realistic picture(farm)  This is what has proven difficult to accomplish.  And this is what weighs heavily.

Quit Claim Deed

The Quit Claim Deed is in the mail to Fergus Falls.
1/2 of my share of the farm goes to Jane.  The other half is divided equally among the other three families.   I no longer have "legal power" as to farm matters.   I do however, retain an emotional investment.

Another "Interesting" Farm Picture

June 26, 2010 - and there was a garage sale at the farm.  This interesting nut-cracker was for sale.

Coward that I am, I chose not to purchase it.

Farm Buildings - More Pictures

The old farm buildings really photograph well.  Maybe it's the simple colors - white, gray, a little blue.

Here's one of my favorites - looks almost like a face.  At least it did back in 2008 when I took the photo.

Wait - here's another face - if you think widely spaced eyes and a nose make a face.

Some pictures I first blogged about over Labor Day weekend, 2008.  For some reason I created two separate posts.  Here's a link to the second.

Because of my unconventional method of naming files and pictures, I will probably stumble across more farm pictures.

say a few things!

Will others please say a few things about you and yours.   This is supposed to be a conversation not a monologue!
I put this on the facebook page but realize maybe not everyone is on facebook.
Regarding the farm:   Billy and Lenny Schepper  (they are old enough to call Bill and Lennard)   Anyway, they have enquired abt buying the "back forty" of the farm.   that would be the west half of the farm I presume.   Think abt this and talk among your family.  Would you be wanting to sell your share?
More cutie pies!
Bill, can I give you a hug?

Birth of a Blog

We are scattered far and wide with busy lives and not enough communication to keep us connected.   The aim of this blog is to  be a conversation among us.  Share what's going on in your life.   Let us all share your joy and let us all empathize and support you when there is sadness.

Or just read what has been written and be envolved according to your choice.

My last day at the lake for the summer.  The angle of the sun is so low that I had to take pictures down off the wall so they don't fade.     The farmers are harvesting corn and the last cutting of alfalfa.  It all takes me back.  I loved September.   Back to school after summer got boring.   Even riding the school bus was fun.

I have in mind a few pictures to post.   I think this blog will be fun!

Beyond the Buildings

I know that some of you have wonderful memories of the farm beyond the buildings.  As a relative newcomer to the family - OK it's been about 20 years - most of my farm activity is confined to the area near the house and buildings.  Only twice have I ventured out into the fields - and the land beyond.

A few weeks ago, Helen took John and I out back for a walk in the woods.  If memory serves me right, it had been 6 years since I'd been back there.

After walking across the alfalfa fields, and beside the corn field, we came to the spot where we thought the trail into the woods should be.  The trail was overgrown and hard to locate, but we we eventually found our way and spent some time alongside the swamps located back in the woods.

There's lots of water this year, though you could tell it had been higher.  The shoreline was walkable but damp where the water had recently receded.

Here we see John and Helen observing the shoreline.  There were a variety of waterfowl - not the usual ones (Canada Geese and Mallards).  I did not bring my binoculars but I believe there were a number of blue winged teal, along with some wood ducks.  We also saw phoebes who perched in trees near the swamp and flew out to gather insects hovering over the water.

On the walk back to the farm we took the scenic route so Helen could show us the deer stand.  Both John and I climbed up (and I took the picture below).  There were a number of bees circling around us in the stand.  Recalling Winnie-the-Pooh (and my bee sting allergies), we thought it best to climb down before they attacked.

It's amazing how green everything was - only a month ago.  Last weekend the grasses and trees were dry as a bone and leaves were beginning to fall.

Getting Started

Let's get started with some pictures from the farm.

The photo above was in November 2012 when were up to Vergas for Bub's memorial service.  Despite the sad occasion, the kids were keen to visit the cabin and farm.  Shana was the only one of our immediate family who had visited the farm and surrounding area during the "off season". The kids and I had only seen it during the the sunny, summer months. It was a sunny day - but cold.  The leaves were all gone.  The farm was quiet - settled down for the winter to come.

The next three were from Labor Day weekend last year, in 2011.
